Crafting systems vary dramatically between MMOs, but their relevance to raiding is consistent: crafted items provide targeted upgrades that fill gearing gaps, consumables fuel every raid attempt, and profession knowledge saves substantial gold over the course of a tier.

WoW’s Crafting Order System

WoW’s Dragonflight-era crafting introduced a revolutionary profession system where crafting quality directly determines item power. Crafted raid gear at maximum quality reaches item levels competitive with Heroic raid loot, providing targeted upgrades for specific slots before you have enough raid clears to fill them naturally.

The Crafting Order system connects crafters and customers through an in-game interface. You submit a work order specifying the item, provide the special reagents like Spark of Ingenuity or Enchanted Crests, and a skilled crafter fulfills the order. This system makes high-end crafting accessible without requiring you to level a profession yourself.

Embellishments on WoW crafted gear add powerful special effects. Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch provides a damage proc. Toxified Armor Patch applies poison damage. Blue Silken Lining grants mastery when above a health threshold. Choosing the right embellishments for your class and raid role provides a performance advantage that persists across the entire tier.

Profession specializations in WoW determine crafting quality. A Blacksmith specialized in Armor smithing produces higher quality plate gear than a generalist. Finding dedicated crafters with maxed specializations for the items you need is part of raid preparation that many new players overlook.

FFXIV’s Comprehensive Crafting Ecosystem

FFXIV features the deepest crafting system in the MMO genre, where crafting classes (Disciples of the Hand) level independently and produce virtually everything in the economy. For raiders, the relevant crafts are Alchemist for potions, Culinarian for food, and the armoring and smithing classes for gear.

Crafted gear in FFXIV serves as the entry path into each Savage tier. When a new Savage raid launches, crafted HQ gear at the current maximum item level provides the baseline equipment needed to begin progression. Raiders who can craft their own gear or have guild crafters ready on patch day begin progression immediately rather than waiting to accumulate tomestones.

Pentamelding crafted gear, which involves overmelding materia beyond guaranteed slots, pushes crafted items closer to raid-drop equivalents. The stat gains from pentamelding are meaningful during early progression when every point matters. As the tier progresses and raid drops replace crafted pieces, pentamelded gear transitions to alt-character equipment.

FFXIV’s food and potion system provides meaningful stat boosts. HQ Baba Ghanoush or equivalent current-tier food provides a percentage-based stat increase plus a fixed stat boost that represents a genuine performance improvement. Grade 8 Tinctures provide a thirty-second burst of increased primary stat that aligns with party buff windows. Self-crafting these consumables saves tens of thousands of gil per week compared to market board purchasing.

GW2’s Legendary Crafting and Stat Flexibility

Guild Wars 2 takes a different approach where crafted Ascended gear provides the statistical maximum and Legendary gear adds the convenience of stat-swapping without penalty. Once you own a Legendary armor set, you can switch between Power DPS, Condition DPS, and Support stats between encounters with a single click.

The investment required for Legendary gear in GW2 is enormous, requiring months of material acquisition and crafting, but the long-term payoff for raiders who play multiple builds is unmatched. A player with Legendary armor never needs to worry about gearing for build swaps again, freeing them to focus purely on skill execution and encounter knowledge.

GW2’s consumable system includes food and utility items that provide stat bonuses and special effects. Ascended Feasts provide group-wide food buffs similar to WoW cauldrons, reducing per-player costs for organized raid groups. Crafting these group consumables makes guild crafters essential team members.

Lost Ark’s Honing and Enhancement System

Lost Ark’s crafting relevance to raiding centers on the honing system, which progressively upgrades gear through material investment. Each honing attempt has a success probability that decreases at higher levels, creating a resource-intensive gearing process that determines raid readiness.

Battle items in Lost Ark function as raid consumables: HP potions for personal survivability, destruction bombs for stagger checks, whirlwind grenades for stagger contribution, and flares for revealing boss mechanics. Crafting these through your Stronghold’s workshop costs less than purchasing from the auction house.

The Early-Tier Advantage and Economic Strategy

Crafted gear is most valuable at the start of a new raid tier, when raid drops have not yet replaced pre-raid equipment. Having crafted pieces ready on day one gives a measurable advantage during early progression that translates to faster boss kills and more time spent on later progression bosses.

Stockpile crafting materials before tier launch when prices are stable. Launch week material costs spike dramatically as every crafter competes for the same resources. Buying herbs, ore, and cloth two weeks before the tier opens saves fifty to seventy percent compared to launch-week prices.
