Raid Attunement and Prerequisite Content
Raid Attunement and Prerequisite Content
Many MMOs gate raid access behind prerequisite content: quest chains, reputation grinds, dungeon completions, or item level thresholds. Understanding and completing these requirements efficiently gets you into raids faster and prevents the frustration of reaching raid night unprepared.
Why Attunements Exist
Attunements serve as a pacing mechanism, ensuring players experience story content and develop basic competency before entering raids. They prevent undergeared or mechanically unprepared players from immediately entering content designed for experienced groups, which protects both the new player and the established players who would group with them.
While sometimes frustrating, attunements provide structure to the progression path. Completing them demonstrates commitment and provides a measurable sense of accomplishment before you even set foot in the raid instance. The journey to raid readiness can itself be satisfying when the attunement is well designed.
Historical Attunement Systems
WoW’s attunement history provides case studies in both good and problematic design. Vanilla WoW’s Onyxia attunement required a multi-step quest chain through Blackrock Depths that told the story of Onyxia’s infiltration of Stormwind. Burning Crusade’s Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep attunements required clearing specific heroic dungeons and previous raids in sequence.
The most notorious attunement was Burning Crusade’s Mount Hyjal prerequisite, which required clearing both SSC and TK before entering the next raid tier. When guilds struggled with these raids, their members could not progress to later content, creating bottlenecks that frustrated the community. Blizzard eventually removed most mandatory attunements in response.
FFXIV requires completing the Main Scenario Quest to unlock each tier of raid content. This ensures players experience the story context for each raid but can frustrate returning players who must clear dozens of hours of MSQ before reaching current endgame. Skip potions (story and level boosts) exist as a paid shortcut for players who prioritize reaching raids quickly.
Lost Ark gates legion raids behind item level requirements that require honing gear through repeated content completion. Each tier of legion raid requires a specific minimum item level, creating a natural progression path from earlier to later raids.
Types of Prerequisites in Modern Games
Quest chain attunements require completing a series of missions that tell the story leading to the raid. Modern quest chains are typically short, taking one to three hours to complete and providing context for the raid’s narrative without creating multi-week roadblocks.
Gear score or item level requirements set a minimum equipment threshold. Meeting these requires running dungeons, completing world content, and potentially crafting or purchasing gear to fill weak slots. Modern games generally set these thresholds at levels achievable through diverse content paths so no single activity becomes a required grind.
Achievement-based requirements demand completion of specific content, like clearing all dungeons at a particular difficulty or defeating prerequisite bosses in earlier raids. FFXIV requires clearing each Normal raid floor before unlocking the corresponding Savage floor.
Reputation and currency grinds, while less common in modern raid attunements, still appear in some games. Gating raid access behind weeks of daily quests creates artificial time barriers that generate more frustration than accomplishment.
Completing Attunements Efficiently
Map out the full attunement process before starting. Some steps can be completed simultaneously, like gathering reputation while doing quests in the same zone. Identifying parallel paths saves days or weeks of effort.
Group up for attunement content when possible. Many steps are faster with help, and chances are your guildmates need the same completions. Coordinating guild attunement runs is standard practice that builds camaraderie while accomplishing practical goals.
Prioritize the longest steps first. If a reputation grind takes three weeks of daily quests, start that immediately while completing shorter quest chains alongside it. Front-loading time-gated content prevents the disappointment of completing everything except the three-week reputation grind with raid night approaching.
Supporting New and Returning Players
Established raiders should help newer members complete attunements. The time invested pays dividends when those players are available for the raid roster sooner. A guild that actively assists with attunement completion builds loyalty and accelerates recruitment pipelines.
