Despite surface differences, raid encounters across every major MMO draw from the same pool of mechanic archetypes. Recognizing these patterns means you can adapt to new encounters faster, regardless of which game you are playing.

Stack and Spread

Many bosses alternate between mechanics that require the raid to group tightly and mechanics that punish players for being close together. Learning to transition between these states quickly and cleanly is a foundational raiding skill.

Stack mechanics often involve sharing damage across all nearby players, making the hit survivable. Spread mechanics target individual players with effects that damage or debuff nearby allies. Mistaking which is active causes preventable deaths.

Don’t Stand in Bad

Ground-targeted abilities that create hazardous zones are universal. Fire, void zones, puddles, and similar effects punish players who fail to move. This is the most basic raiding skill and yet remains a common cause of death at every skill level.

The challenge increases when multiple ground effects overlap or when movement is restricted by other mechanics simultaneously. Practice maintaining your rotation while moving out of danger zones.

Tank Swaps

Most boss encounters include a reason for tanks to trade aggro periodically. Stacking debuffs that increase damage taken, mechanics that incapacitate the current tank, or split phases that require tanks in different locations all serve this purpose.

Clean tank swaps require communication and timing. The new tank taunts, the old tank stops generating threat, and the transition happens without the boss randomly targeting other players.

Add Phases

Bosses frequently summon additional enemies that must be dealt with before they overwhelm the group. Add phases test the raid ability to split attention between the boss and the adds, prioritize targets, and manage area damage.

Some adds must die quickly before they enrage or heal the boss. Others must be controlled and killed in a specific order. Understanding the add priority for each encounter is critical.

Enrage Timers

Most bosses have a hard or soft enrage timer that limits how long the group has to defeat them. Hard enrages instantly kill the raid. Soft enrages ramp up damage until survival becomes impossible.

Enrage timers ensure that the group must maintain sufficient damage output throughout the encounter, not just survive mechanics indefinitely. Meeting the timer requires both individual performance and efficient strategy execution.

Phase Transitions

Complex bosses change their ability set at health thresholds or time intervals. Each phase introduces new mechanics while sometimes retiring old ones. Phase transitions often include brief intermission periods with their own mechanics.

Understanding the full flow of an encounter, all phases included, prevents surprises that cause wipes on otherwise clean attempts.
